March News: Easter Edition

March News: Easter Edition

We love this time of year. It’s harvest! This vintage was shaping up to be one of the best growing seasons in years. Then mother nature changed her mind…

  • Strike one: In late February a significant fire at the mountain we call home, Mount Cole,  devastated the land that surrounds our property. Our home and sheds were saved by the amazing firefighters, but the bush burnt and our newly planted vines were bulldozed to create a fire-break or died due to high heat and lack of water.
  • Strike two: The intensity of the fire sent smoke across our region and some vineyards were affected by smoke taint – including the vineyard we purchase our Shiraz grapes from.
  • Strike three: We had a heatwave of three 40C days in early March and our Viognier grapes did not fare well. We will not be making Viognier in 2024.

The good news, we are making Sangiovese Rosé this year and Adam has managed to source some high quality Shiraz grapes from another Grampians vineyard! We look forward to sharing our wines at Pyrenees Unearthed (Avoca) in April and Grampians Grape Escape (Halls Gap) in May.

Easter is just around the corner and it is one of the most popular times to visit our region. It’s a lovely time to camp, bush walk and enjoy family time outdoors with our warm days and cool evenings.

Fish on Good Friday is a must in our house, this year we are cooking Barramundi. You can find the recipe below.

Enjoy!

Cheers, Nancy (and Adam)

Viognier Pairing Ideas

Viognier Pairing Ideas

If you haven’t tried Viognier, you’re in for a treat. It has the complexity and body of a chardonnay but the stand out flavour notes are of stone fruit, especially peach and apricot. Try it with one of our favourite pairings:

  1. – Barramundi with Lemon Butter Sauce: We love cooking grilled fish with our home grown lemons, especially on Good Friday. This recipe is low on prep, quick to cook and delicious with an aromatic white wine like our Viognier. Barramundi has that slightly wild taste, making it a perfect balance with Viognier’s fresh acidity.
  2. – Fig & Goat’s Cheese Tart: Figs are in season right now. It’s a short season so make the most of them with this tart. I love this Donna Hay recipe that uses store-bought shortcrust pastry. The subtle acidity of our Viognier enhances the tart’s sweet figs balanced with the tangy goat’s cheese.
  3. – Roasted Lamb Rack with Herbes de Provence: Easter Sunday is lamb time for us. My go-to herbs for lamb are homegrown thyme and rosemary. I like to use them because they compliment lamb and they also draw out the herbal notes of our SubRosa Viognier.

Before it’s gone forever…the 2021 SubRosa Grampians Viognier

Our 2021 Grampians Viognier has been a hit with many, including this fantastic review and 95 pts from the Halliday Wine Companion: “A rich, viscous expression of this variety and an excellent one, too. This is a powerful white wine. Grilled stone fruit and wild flings of spice meet toast, butterscotch and quartz. Length, power and dare – this wine has it all. 2023 – 2028. Special Value.”

There are only a few cases left of this beauty. We’re limiting the quantities per order to a maximum of four bottles. Minimum orders are six bottles so may we recommend another Halliday favourite, our 2019 Grampians Pyrenees Shiraz as a delicious pairing for the Roasted Lamb Rack with Herbes de Provence you might try on Easter Sunday…
