SubRosa 2019 Pyrenees Nebbiolo

SubRosa 2019 Pyrenees Nebbiolo

SubRosa 2019 Pyrenees Nebbiolo

Pyrenees, Victoria

$48

A complex, medium-bodied, fruit-forward wine, with berry aromas and lingering mild tannins.

  • Halliday Wine Companion, 92 Pts: "There's finesse to the tannin and ample complexity, not to mention straight lines of acidity, and yet this still feels like a substantial nebbiolo. Stewed plums and dust, woodsy spice and decayed rose petal characters make a pretty convincing argument for the wine's quality. Drink 2023 - 2030."

Huon Hooke, 91 Pts: "Medium-full red with a purple trim, bright and attractive. There are dried-herb, sweet berry and floral aromas, more fruity and aromatic than expected of nebbiolo, while the palate is medium-bodied and quite mild in its tannins. Gentle sweet berry fruit leads. It's a moderately complex, fruit-driven wine, pretty and easygoing—just a mild kick of firmness lingering on the farewell to remind us of the grape."

International Wine Challenge, 92 Pts: "Rose, cherry and spice with dried herbs and hints of mushroom. Light, bright and crunchy with a mineral core. T his shows that Aussie Nebbiolo can age beautifully. Delicious plums and herbaceousness."

  • North-east of the Grampians wine growing region is the Pyrenees mountain range. Malakoff Estate Vineyard is located at the southern end of the township of Landsborough. Nebbiolo vines were planted in 1998. At an altitude of approximately 300m above sea level, the soils are friable with high amounts of ironstone and quartz scattered throughout. Vines grow in warm conditions surrounded by the Estate’s eucalyptus trees.

  • 100% Pyrenees Nebbiolo. Hand picked and plunged. Whole berry ferment. 16 months in French oak. No fining. 12 months in bottle pre-release. Vegan.

  • Pairs well with friends and pizza, pasta, charcuterie, truffles and mushrooms. Asian food is also a good match, we love it with Thai red curry, chicken or beef.

Adam's Notes

The 2019 growing season was warm and dry. We had some really bad wind during flowering which led to a lower than normal fruit set. The Nebbiolo vine yields were lower than average but grape concentration and flavour were high. I really enjoy making, and drinking Nebbiolo. On the nose our 2019 Neb has black cherries, aniseed and fresh leather, while on the palate, plums and black figs jump out. This is a versatile wine and can be enjoyed all year. I like to drink it with hard cheese, rich pasta dishes and steak. One of my favourite things about our Neb, is that it's approachable young and will age well.

"It’s a vibrant, pure-feeling expression, loaded with perfume, lashed with savoury, iron-filing and graphite-tannins, bright in fruit flavour...It drives assertively then lingers with sappy fruit and minerally feel. It’s such a pleasure. It’s great."

Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

"Super solid. One of the best Australian Nebbiolos...from one of the best vineyards...Great structure, mature tannins, great purity of fruit, complete and full of flavour."

James, The Intrepid Wino

"Very interesting wine with a depth of flavour but still a brightness on the palate. Would probably balance up nicely with a spicy Asian dish or something that it cuts through like pork or duck."

James Moffat

"Delightful - rich and smooth."

Hannah Richards

"Great example of Australia neb - delicious."
