Mourvèdre Edition

Mourvèdre Edition

When Adam found out his friend of 25 years was growing Mourvèdre in Bendigo, he was intrigued. It was 2022 and the growing season was warm, but not too hot. The Mourvèdre grapes ripened slowly on the banks of the Campaspe River. When Adam visited and saw the low-cropping vines he knew they would produce a wine with richness and depth. This is how our SubRosa Mourvèdre story began.

Adam picked only a small amount of Mourvèdre grapes and worked with them in a similar style to Shiraz. Only 45 cases were produced. We love how this wine has turned out and we’re excited to see how it will evolve over the next 10-12 years.

I knew very little about Mourvèdre when Adam decided to make this wine. It’s been fun working my way through the many (many!!!) wine books in our library to pull together our Ultimate Mourvèdre Guide. We hope this will help you discover why this grape is so special.

We have tried to answer all your questions like where Mourvèdre comes from, why it has many names, what does it taste like and how does it compare to Shiraz and Cabernet?

We have also pulled together some Mourvèdre pairing ideas. Delicious recipes that Adam and I think you will love when deciding what to eat with this special wine.

Want to try our Mourvèdre? We will have it on tasting at the Red Series event in Ballarat on July 26-27.

We’re pretty excited about this wine and were hoping to make it again this year (2024) but mother nature didn’t cooperate. The grapes didn’t ripen as Adam had hoped thanks to a cooler end to the season.

Our limited release SubRosa 2022 Mourvèdre is now available via our online shop.

Cheers, Nancy (and Adam)

Learn About Australian Mourvèdre

Wine is a never ending discovery. My knowledge of cool-climate Shiraz, Nebbiolo and Viognier has come a long way. This time it was Mourvèdre. Little did I know of the long history Australia has with this varietal, going back to 1832. And how it’s a wonderfully food-friendly wine. We created a number of articles we hope are useful to improve your knowledge and inspire you to try it as a single varietal.

2022 SubRosa Mourvèdre Release

Review by Ben Rothstein, Sommelier

“Beautiful nose of blackberries and hints of red licorice, cloves and sweet spices. Palate is complex with a medium body. Boasts beautiful notes of ripe blackberries and blackcurrant, followed by sweet tobacco and cloves. The acid is balanced perfectly with a silky tannin structure and long finish that goes forever. Another cracker from Adam at SubRosa.”

We only made 45 cases of the 2022 Mourvèdre. And unfortunately the following years didn’t produce the quality Adam liked, so we may not be producing it for a while. All this to say…get some before this beauty is gone!
