To the north-east of the Grampians wine growing region is the Pyrenees mountain range where our friends the John family have their Malakoff Estate vineyard. Adam sources Nebbiolo and Shiraz grapes for SubRosa, which grow surrounded by the Estate’s eucalyptus trees. The Pyrenees wine region in Victoria, Australia is renowned for high quality red wines.
While only 20-30km from the Grampians wine region, the Pyrenees region is known for having a warmer climate. The Shiraz grapes grown at Malakoff Estate are richer and bolder than those grown in the Grampians.
Nebbiolo is well suited to the warm days and nights of the Pyrenees as it is a late ripening grape.
SubRosa’s Pyrenees Nebbiolo and Shiraz wines continually score over 94 points by reviewers including James Halliday, Huon Hooke and Mike Bennie.
SubRosa 2015 Pyrenees Malakoff Estate Shiraz as reviewed by James Halliday (96 points).
“Grown by the John family at Malakoff Estate, matured for 16 months in French barriques. Its deeper crimson-purple colour and medium to full-bodied palate are in continuing contrast for the two SubRosa Shirazs, but not in the skill of the winemaker. Balance is often said to be the one word to describe a great wine, and this exudes velvety black cherry at every turn. Cedary oak nuances and persistent, pliable tannins complete the picture.”

SubRosa 2016 Pyrenees Nebbiolo as reviewed by Mike Bennie of Winefront (94 points).
“It’s a vibrant, pure-feeling expression, loaded with perfume, lashed with savoury, iron-filing and graphite-tannins, bright in fruit flavour, dusted with attractive spice. There’s also a distinct vibrancy here, a cheery, cherry-kissed feel that’s easy for earlier access, despite there being cool, amaro-like acidity and a sheath of building tannin. It drives assertively then lingers with sappy fruit and minerally feel. It’s such a pleasure. It’s great.”
