SubRosa 2019 Grampians Pyrenees Shiraz

SubRosa 2019 Grampians Pyrenees Shiraz

Grampians, Victoria

$36

70% Grampians, 30% Pyrenees. Plum, whiff of star anise, supple tannins.

  • Halliday Wine Companion, 94 Pts: "This floods the palate with sweet, ripe, plum-shot flavour, although mint, florals, cedar and smoked spice notes are swept along with it. It's as accomplished as it is seductive, the finesse of its tannin yet another quality marker. Drink 2023 - 2031. Special Value."

Huon Hooke, 91 Pts: "Deep colour, aromas of fresh-turned earth and plum and a whiff of star anise. Medium-bodied shiraz with supple tannins and excellent balance. Good early drinking shiraz which will also keep well."

  • Composition: Shiraz

    Vintage: 2019

    Region: Grampians, Victoria

    Winemaker: Adam Louder

    Alcohol Percentage: 13.5

  • Grampians: Hand picked from a vineyard in Great Western. Shiraz vines were planted in the 1990’s and are grown in red ironstone soil.

Pyrenees: Shiraz vines were planted in 1998 at the Malakoff Estate Vineyard. At an altitude of approximately 300m above sea level, the soils are friable with high amounts of ironstone and quartz scattered throughout. Vines grow in warm conditions surrounded by the Estate’s eucalyptus trees.

  • Two wines were made, then blended to Adam’s liking. 70% Grampians Shiraz, 30% Pyrenees Shiraz. Hand picked and plunged. 30% new oak. 16 months in French oak.

  • Brings out it's best with a juicy grilled ribeye steak, hearty lamb chops, or a rich mushroom risotto. Or just want to nibble on something? It's goes perfectly with a tangy blue cheese.

Adam's Notes

The 2019 growing season was warm and dry. Severe wind during flowering led to lower than normal fruit set. Vine yields were lower than average resulting in complex and intense shiraz grapes. I made two shiraz wines. One from the Grampians and one from the Pyrenees. After more than a year in French oak, I did some blending trials and decided the spicy and peppery cool climate Grampians shiraz was enhanced when blended with a little of the richer and bolder Pyrenees Shiraz. One of my favourite meals is spaghetti bolognaise, and our Grampians Pyrenees Shiraz is the wine I like to pair it with. Don't forget the garlic bread!
